Best Hostels of 2017

It’s no secret that the globe is scattered with incredibly accommodating hostels. Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot in the highlands or a beach-side party mecca, a simple google search populates hundreds of thousands of options. However, we always prefer to take personal recommendations, which is why we’ve created a list of our favourite places that we’ve crashed at in the past.

The B.I.G, Cape Town

Winner of Best Hostel in Africa in the prestigious Hostelworld Hoscars, The B.I.G is a boutique beauty that was born out of a vision to create a hostel which shows off Cape Town’s endless allures. Placed perfectly in Green Point, one of Cape Town’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, The B.I.G is just a ten minute walk from the Victoria and Albert Waterfront and means you’ll be perfectly placed to enjoy the best that Cape Town has to offer.

HOOF Loves: The self-catering amenities – who could ask for more than an authentic braai and a spacious new pizza oven?

The Wombat, Budapest

Central location, spacious dorms and a great atmosphere make the Wombat a firm fan favourite in the backpacking mecca of Budapest. Located just off Andrassy, Budapest’s main vein that links the entire city, The Wombat is affordable, clean and places you next to some of the city’s most lively ‘ruin bars’.

HOOF Loves: The shared central bar and lounge area, where there’s always an abundance of world travellers looking to hang out.

Zephyr Lodge, Lanquin Guatemala

High in the Guatemalan highlands, Zephyr Lodge tops our list of favourite Central American hostels. This place has it all; ideal location, perfect atmosphere and double-take views from every angle. Built by two well-travelled backpackers, Zephyr Lodge is the perfect place to disconnect, explore, and meet some of the friendliest travellers you’ll ever come across.

HOOF Loves: The themed, communal meals that are served on large sharing tables every evening. Our favourite; curry night.

Outpost Hostel, El Nido, Philippines

Close enough to El Nido town to experience its eclectic nightlife, but far enough that peace and tranquillity come as standard, The Outpost is El Nido’s newest hostel and offers the perfect place to explore the awe-striking Bacuit archipelago. The food is great, the location is ideal and the staff know how to strike the perfect balance between party, adventure and chill.

HOOF Loves: The menu of activities on offer, from tours of Palawan’s northernmost jewels, to boat trips to the finest offshore beauties.

USA Hostels Ocean Beach, San Diego

Just a two-block stroll from one of San Diego’s best beaches, Ocean Beach’s psychedelic fascade gives way to a community of like-minded global travellers that come for the location and stay for the awesome mixture of events and tours on offer, from 2x weekly beach bonfires to morning visits to the local farmers market.

HOOF Loves: The free shuttle bus to the region’s must-visit spots, saving you time, money and effort and allowing you to explore San Diego like a local.
